Pepper: the classic warm-up that trains everything

Pass, set, hit, repeat. A fast partner rally that sharpens control and reactions.

Diagram of the pepper volleyball drill with three players passing, setting and hitting

Pepper is a continuous partner rally where one player digs, the other sets, and the first player hits a controlled attack back. It looks simple and quietly trains reaction time, ball control and communication. New to it? Warm up first with the passing pairs drill.

The pattern

  1. Player A hits a gentle attack to Player B.
  2. Player B digs to a target in the middle.
  3. Player C (or A again) sets the ball.
  4. The setter or hitter attacks back, and the rally repeats.

Rules to keep it clean

  • Hit at about 50 percent power, since control matters most.
  • Call "mine" for every ball.
  • Reset the pattern when the ball hits the floor and count your best streak.

Coaching points

Stay low between contacts, keep your platform quiet and set the ball high enough for the hitter to approach. If streaks are short, slow the speed down before adding any difficulty.

GoalBeat your streak record each week. Twenty in a row is a solid benchmark for intermediate players.
